Sea Turtle, Poster Child of Endangered Animals

As a child I loved watching nature documentaries about nature from people like Nigel Marvin and Sir David Frederick Attenborough. There I learned about arribadas or turtle nesting. As a reptile lover i was intrigued by there plight of existing because of our neglight activities. My dream of watching them nest has not come true yet but I hope someday I can watch them nest. This blog is my message to the world about their plight and our responsibility to protect their existence.

An  arribadas or mass turtle nesting a spectacle on itself ,one of the greatest natural phenomenons known to man. This phenomenon baffles scientists  even after such advancement in our technology. We don't  completely  know how they do it. They travel thousands of mile  to reach there  nesting ground ,the same beach they were born, but due to poaching and habitat degradation, some species   have    declined by 90 %,further oil spills like deep-sea horizon have exacerbate existing problems, further the problem of bycatch (accidental fishing)  caused by our modern fishing practices are some of my biggest concern. Another big issue is light pollution as turtle hatchlings use the light of the moon to navigate. Further habitat destruction has caused hatchling survival rate to plummet further more.

As  little as 1 in 10000 hatchlings survive to adulthood in normal circumstances  . As they use mass hatching as a tool  of survival , this is due to evolutionary pressure. which makes predation an issue for their survival . Further our plastic pollution can cause there death as they mistake plastic for there food  jellyfish, further due to human induced climate change there sex ratio has been decimated as they really on incubation temperature to sex there offspring, in temperature below 31 degree  they have mostly male hatchling and above that temperature there will be more female birth.  This peculiar reproductive tactic helped them survive  our most recent mass extinction event (Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pgextinction event).  This is a prime example of our intention to disregard the importance of keystone species like sea turtles. Due to our activities like poaching and habitat destruction most sea turtles are threatened with extinction, with one species being data deficient, they are the poster child of endangered species alongside pandas. They are crucial for the health of our seas and oceans. They also play an important role to control spices  like jelly fish hence making our seas more bio diverse. They also play a vital  role in the tourism industry  in  countries like Costa Rica as they rely heavily on eco-tourism. Even a moderate increase  of less than two  degrees can be enough to decimate all populations by decimating their sex ratio. So controlling  climate change is essential for the survival of all sea turtle species.
