On a regular interaction program-Green Discussion, Charina Cabriado working for CAI-Asia Center and Clean Air Network Nepal presented her overview on “Air Quality Issues, Challenges and Opportunities in Nepal” and shared the findings of “Walkability Survey” on 19th February.

On her presentation, she shared the status of air quality in Kathmandu valley, its potential local and global impacts like economy, tourism, human health and global warming. According to her presentation, Kathmandu is one of the most polluted cities in the world in terms on air quality. “Premature death in Ktm valley is 1600 per year due to poor air quality”, she said. She also further stressed on potential options to improve the air quality of Ktm by reducing vehicle emission. “Walking is one of the most efficient and sustainable urban mobility in the urban areas”, she further added.

CEN and CANN in support of CAI-Asia Center  carried out a Walkability Survey last month aiming to assess then improve the pedestrian infrastructure and services in the city. “The walkability index of Kathmandu City from four surveyed areas is 559 which is worst  comparing with other cities like Bangkok is 121”, she said in a dissemination session of findings of Walkability survey.” About 45.8 percent of the total respondents’ assessment of the existing pedestrian infrastructures in the city to be in its worst condition”, she further added.  Lack of awareness, policies, coordination among all the responsible authorities, poor urbanization plan and weak agency for implementation are the main barriers in improving the pedestrian facilities.

Around 24 youth participants along with nine young women summiteers attended the program. Sailee Basnet, one of the brave summiteers shared her experiences, upcoming projects and her enthusiasm working in the environment.
